How Gastric Bypass Surgery can Help You Lose Weight

Unlike some other weight loss surgeries, a gastric bypass helps you lose weight in three ways.
Unlike gastric sleeve surgery, which only shrinks the size of your stomach, a gastric bypass shrinks your stomach and bypasses the majority of your small intestine.
Unlike gastric sleeve surgery, which only shrinks the size of your stomach, a gastric bypass shrinks your stomach and bypasses the majority of your small intestine.

Calorie Restriction

During a gastric bypass, Dr. Carlos will reduce the size of your stomach by dividing it into two sections: a small pouch and a large (gastric) pouch. The small stomach pouch will hold the food you eat. Because of its small size, the amount of food you can consume will be dramatically reduced and limit your caloric intake.

Calorie Absorption

During your gastric bypass, Dr. Carlos will reroute your small intestine so food will travel from your new stomach pouch directly to the lower portion of your small intestine. This rerouting restricts caloric absorption.

Ghrelin Production

Ghrelin is the hormone that makes us feel hungry. When your small intestine is rerouted, the production of this hormone is reduced, allowing you to feel fuller for longer.

A Breakdown of the Roux-en-Y Method

Roux-en-y diagram
The Roux-en-Y method is a laparoscopic technique used during the gastric bypass procedure. The "Roux limb," or the rerouted portion of your small intestine, is named after César Roux, who first created the technique. The Y was added due to your rerouted small intestine being in a "Y" shape. Roux-en-Y and gastric bypass are often used interchangeably.

Gastric Sleeve v. Gastric Bypass What Is the Difference?

Gastric bypass and gastric sleeve surgery are two of the most commonly performed bariatric surgeries. Dr. Carlos can determine which procedure is right for you based on your health history and weight loss goals.

Gastric sleeve surgery is similar to gastric bypass in that it shrinks the size of your stomach. Unlike gastric bypass, this is where the gastric sleeve procedure stops. A gastric sleeve only reduces the amount you eat; it does not reduce the number of calories absorbed by the small intestine.
