Gastric Bypass Surgery

Is your weight putting your health at risk? Have you tried diet and exercise with no results?

Gastric bypass surgery can help you lose up to 80% of your body weight within the first year.

Our bariatric surgeon, Dr. Alberto Carlos, can perform a gastric bypass in Tijuana, Mexico, to reduce your weight and restore your health.

How Gastric Bypass Surgery can Help You Lose Weight

Gastric bypass surgery can help kickstart your weight-loss journey. Patients who undergo a gastric bypass can expect to lose around 100 pounds within their first year. Unlike some other weight loss surgeries, a gastric bypass helps you lose weight in three ways:
Unlike gastric sleeve surgery, which only shrinks the size of your stomach, a gastric bypass shrinks your stomach and bypasses the majority of your small intestine.
Unlike gastric sleeve surgery, which only shrinks the size of your stomach, a gastric bypass shrinks your stomach and bypasses the majority of your small intestine.

Calorie Restriction

During a gastric bypass, Dr. Carlos will reduce the size of your stomach by dividing it into two sections: a small pouch and a large (gastric) pouch. The small stomach pouch will hold the food you eat. Because of its small size, the amount of food you can consume will be dramatically reduced and limit your caloric intake.

Calorie Absorption

During your gastric bypass, Dr. Carlos will reroute your small intestine so food will travel from your new stomach pouch directly to the lower portion of your small intestine. This rerouting restricts caloric absorption.

Ghrelin Production

Ghrelin is the hormone that makes us feel hungry. When your small intestine is rerouted, the production of this hormone is reduced, allowing you to feel fuller for longer.

A Breakdown of the Roux-en-Y Method

The Roux-en-Y method is a laparoscopic technique used during the gastric bypass procedure. The "Roux limb," or the rerouted portion of your small intestine, is named after César Roux, who first created the technique. The Y was added due to your rerouted small intestine being in a "Y" shape. Roux-en-Y and gastric bypass are often used interchangeably.

Our Surgeon Skillfully Employs Advanced Laparoscopic Techniques

Close up of laparoscopic tools in action

Dr. Carlos is one of the most experienced bariatric surgeons not just in Tijuana, but throughout all of Mexico. His experience allows him to use the advanced laparoscopic surgery technique to its full effect when performing Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery.

Dr. Carlos uses a tube-like device called a laparoscope that has both a light source and camera. By accessing and viewing the interior of your abdomen with this tool, he can complete weight loss surgery without the need for large incisions. When compared to traditional methods, the laparoscopic technique achieves:

  • Less pain
  • Less bleeding
  • Reduced scarring
  • Faster recovery

Weight Loss With Surgery Saves Lives

A study involving nearly 22,000 weight loss surgery recipients, many of whom received gastric bypass, showed incredible results. Both men and women experienced significantly reduced mortality rates, with notably reduced fatalities from cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes.

Factors That Affect Your Candidacy for Gastric Bypass Surgery

The best way to determine your candidacy is to contact our Tijuana practice. Our trained medical staff will discuss your health history and weight loss goals to determine if gastric bypass or another bariatric surgery like a gastric sleeve would be best for you.

Some factors to consider are:

BMI

Patients seeking this weight loss surgery typically have a BMI greater than 40. You may be better suited for another bariatric surgery if your BMI is under 40.

Health

Though good candidates may be dealing with obesity-related health issues like type II diabetes or GERD, to minimize the risk of complications during the bariatric procedure they should otherwise be in decent overall health.

Commitment

A gastric bypass gives you the tools to kickstart your weight loss journey. However, you will need to maintain a healthy diet and active lifestyle to experience the lasting benefits of weight loss.

Gastric Sleeve vs. Gastric Bypass What Is the Difference?

Gastric bypass and gastric sleeve surgery are two of the most commonly performed bariatric surgeries. Dr. Carlos can determine which procedure is right for you based on your health history and weight loss goals.

Gastric sleeve surgery is similar to gastric bypass in that it shrinks the size of your stomach. Unlike gastric bypass, this is where the gastric sleeve procedure stops. A gastric sleeve only reduces the amount you eat; it does not reduce the number of calories absorbed by the small intestine. This is why a gastric bypass can achieve a higher level of weight loss within 12 to 18 months than a gastric sleeve.
