Mini Gastric Bypass

Gastric bypass surgery has helped many people lose weight, but you may not need the extent of changes it involves.

Mini gastric bypass surgery is a simplified version of the procedure involving less operating time and fewer risks.

Vive Bariatrics in Tijuana, B.C., can help you lose most of your excess weight in a year at a fraction of the cost you would pay in the U.S.

What Is a Mini Gastric Bypass?

Mini gastric bypass is a bariatric procedure that divides the stomach into upper and lower pouches and reroutes the small intestine. Mini gastric bypass is different from gastric bypass in that it requires less rerouting of the small intestine, and can be completed in a shorter amount of time.

After your bariatric surgery, food will travel into your small stomach, bypass several feet of the small intestine, then enter the small intestine where it will resume the digestive process.

Mini gastric bypass is both a restrictive and malabsorptive surgery, meaning it restricts the amount of food you can consume and the number of calories your body can absorb. This leads to effective weight loss.

Mini-gastric bypass creates a new stomach by separating it from the bypassed portion. Food flows from the new stomach into the jejunum, and digestive juices flow from the bypassed stomach portion into the bypassed portion of the small intestine

Check Your BMI

Only patients with a BMI of 40 or higher will be considered for mini gastric bypass surgery. Patients with a BMI of 35 or higher with a weight-related medical condition may also qualify for treatment. We can further explore your candidacy for treatment during a consultation.

How Is Mini Gastric Bypass Performed?

After you've been approved for this weight loss surgery in Tijuana, you can expect these general steps:

All of our surgeons are international doctors, and some are board-certified in both the U.S. and Mexico.
All of our surgeons are international doctors, and some are board-certified in both the U.S. and Mexico.

Anesthesia

You will be given general anesthesia to keep you comfortable throughout your mini gastric bypass surgery.

Incisions

Your bariatric surgeon will make small incisions in your abdomen through which they will insert a laparoscope and surgical instruments.

Stomach

Similar to a gastric sleeve, the stomach will be divided into two sections. The smaller section becomes the new stomach. The larger section remains separate, but will still produce digestive juices to aid in digestion.

Small Intestine

About five to seven feet of the small intestine will be bypassed. The bypass point of the small intestine will be rerouted to connect with your new stomach.

Sutures

The surgical instruments will be removed and the incisions in your abdomen will be sutured closed.

Hospital

You will stay in the hospital for two to three days so we can ensure you're recovering properly. Afterward, patients can stay at our recovery house for further recuperation. It features round-the-clock nursing service and delicious, health-conscious cuisine.

Risks Associated With Mini Gastric Bypass

Though this weight loss surgery presents fewer risks than other bariatric surgery options, patients may experience:
